Help Humphrey Become a Dog in a Million

Humphrey is aiming to be a dog in a million. Here’s your chance to help him get there! Umhlanga-based Humphrey (who may be a Russian wire-haired terrier, we can’t be sure) raises funds for the SPCA and his challenge is to schools, companies, organisations and individuals to donate to his fundraising endeavours. So far this friendly and amenable pooch has raised over R230 000 and wants to get to R1 million.

Humphrey is an SPCA rescue dog himself so he knows exactly what it’s like to rely on this wonderful charity and then be given a loving home. Humphrey began his charity collection about four years ago when he and owner, Alwyn Immerman, did an impromptu 67-minute collection on Mandela Day and managed to raise over R200 in that short time. Alwyn bought Montego dog food for the SPCA with the proceeds and decided not to stop there. Humphrey subsequently began visiting the Umhlanga Medisport Pharmacy once a week where Alwyn, a pharmacist, works. Alwyn, and then a regular client of the pharmacy, erected a special donation box and sign at the pharmacy’s entrance where Humphrey would sit welcoming visitors to the pharmacy, and the collection money began to roll in. The mutt’s monthly takings for the animal charity now equals about R4000 to R5000.

When a La Lucia Junior Primary School mum earlier this year visited the pharmacy and met Humphrey, she suggested that he visit the school and take part in the school’s termly fundraiser. Humphrey did just that and was an instant hit. Children donated R2500 (some by doing extra chores at home) and the school put in another R1500 to make their total donation R4000. Alwyn has now urged other schools, companies and organisations to invite Humphrey to participate in their fundraising exploits too and better what La Lucia Junior raised. The race is on! To donate, visit the Umhlanga Medisport Pharmacy and donate cash, pay via Zapper or do an EFT into the SPCA’s bank account (see accompanying details). Be sure to quote ‘Humphrey’ as the reference so Humphrey’s takings can be accurately recorded.

You can visit Humphrey every Thursday at Umhlanga Medisport Pharmacy, Chartwell Drive, Umhlanga Rocks, from 2pm to 8pm. You might have to queue – visitors come from far and wide (yes, even a UK couple have specially booked a slot with Humphrey!) to say hullo to Humphrey and to take him for walks.
